It is time to collect what our goats have produced over the last 6 months. Their production of mohair is very important and we shear them twice a year. A lock measures between 12 and 20 cm and an adult goat's fleece weighs from 3 to 4 kg. Olivier shears with the same shearing machine used on sheep, but with a special comb. A goat takes much more time to shear (between 10 and 15 mins, against 3 to 5 mins for a sheep). The kids born last March are also shorn for the second time and produce 1.5 kg of the finest and softest mohair. It is called Kid mohair. Once shorn, I sort the mohair. I take out the impurities and, according to the fineness of the fleece, I arrange it in corresponding classes. We have 4 to 5 classes of different fineness. The sorting is refined by an analyst under a microscope to determine the fineness. We then entrust the mohair to professionals so that it can be washed, combed, spun, put in balls or woven for blankets. Quickly go and see the result ! the shop |
